§ 8-2.5. Weapons control.

  • (a)

    Definitions . For the purposes of this section, the following definitions shall apply:

    Dangerous weapon includes, but is not limited to, bowie knives, dirk knives, switchblade knives, metallic knuckles, blackjacks or slingshots.

    Firearm means any device, by whatever name known, which is designed to expel a projectile by the action of an explosion, expansion of gas, or escape of gas, including, but not limited to, a handgun, pistol, air gun, revolver, rifle or shotgun.

    (b)

    Prohibition . No individual within the city may possess a firearm or dangerous weapon, concealed or unconcealed, in the following locations or at the following events:

    (1)

    In city hall, municipal court, Greenville Mid-Delta Airport, any public park, school campus, or at a public meeting of a county, municipal or other governmental body;

    (2)

    A political rally, parade, or public meeting;

    (3)

    A school, college, or professional event, including, but not limited to, an athletic event, a concert, or other group assembly;

    (4)

    In or upon the premises of any financial institution; or

    (5)

    In or upon the premises of any establishment which permits on the premises consumption of beer, wine, liquor or other alcoholic beverages.

    (c)

    Exceptions . The prohibition in subsection (b) does not apply:

    (1)

    If the firearm is in or being carried to and from an area designated for use in a lawful hunting, fishing, or other gun-related sporting event;

    (2)

    If the firearm is in or being carried to or from a certified firearm training facility, provided that the firearm is of the type commonly used in the prescribed activity; or

    (3)

    To peace officers, security guards, or authorized investigators.

    (d)

    Penalties . An individual violating the above prohibition shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable to the limits prohibited by section 1-9.
